About Chinese Arts Centre
Established
in 1986, Chinese Arts Centre has a strong history as a national charity
for the development and promotion of Chinese arts and culture in the
UK. Located in the North West of England, Chinese Arts Centre is part
of the region? rich Chinese heritage. Chinese Arts Centre is based in
Manchester, a city with the second largest Chinese community in the UK.
Manchester is a vibrant artistic city with a flourishing contemporary
art scene. There are many artist studios, galleries and performance
venues in the city with a busy population of contemporary artists
choosing to live and work in Manchester.
Chinese Arts Centre aims to develop an infrastructure to
allow Chinese arts, and especially British Chinese artists, to
flourish. Our work covers four main areas; exhibitions, education,
agency work and advocacy which includes training, conferences and
publications.
In 2003, funded by the Arts Council of England? Lottery
scheme, Chinese Arts Centre built a new flagship centre for Chinese
arts in Britain. The centre contains a gallery which programmes the
best of British and international Chinese art, an artist residency
studio and apartment, an education suite, resource area, offices, shop
and teahouse.

Volunteer and internship programme at the Chinese Arts Centre
Chinese Arts Centre views the use of volunteers and
interns as a positive contribution to the running and development of
the organisation. We believe that, as a publicly funded organisation,
it is our duty to develop the skills within the arts sector. However,
for the relationship to be successful, it needs to be mutually
beneficial, with both parties developing new skills or acquiring new
information. The guidelines below explain the workings of the volunteer
and internship programme and will allow you to decide if the programme
is suitable for you. Chinese Arts Centre particularly welcomes
applications from people of Chinese descent. This is because within the
British arts sector Chinese people are under represented.
Volunteer/Internship guidelines for appointment:
Chinese Arts Centre will appoint volunteers/interns
(V/I) when it has specific work for them to carry out which matches
both their skills and/or areas they wish to develop.
Areas of work could include; research, audience
development, project management, data input and processing, marketing
etc. We welcome your suggestions if you have a specific project you
would like to carry out.
In the majority of cases the V/I will be in Higher Education, eligible for full time employment or retired.
V/Is will be seconded to a member of staff who is most
appropriate to the work being undertaken. The staff member will act as
the V/I? Line Manager. Chinese Arts Centre does not support job
shadowing and so the allocated staff member should not perceived in
this way but rather as someone to offer guidance and support.
If the Line Manager is away from the office, the V/I should liase with the CEO.
The Line Manager will meet with the V/I for at least
one ?ne-to-one meeting a week. Additionally the V/I should have a daily
update with the Line Manager.
When applying for a V/I, people are asked to make clear
the time commitment they can make, i.e; 3 months at 5 days a week, one
day a week indefinitely, one week. This will allow staff to match them
to the most suitable project.
V/I will be asked to come for an interview with the
appropriate staff member. Being offered an interview is by no means an
indication that the V/I will be offered the position.
If appointed V/Is are expected to honour the conditions
set out in the Staff handbook; punctuality, presentation to the public,
Health and Safety, Team work etc. If in violation of these guidelines,
the appointment will be terminated.
V/Is will be offered a per diem of ?5.00 per day to
cover their lunch. If the V/I is required to work in an evening a per
diem of ?10.00 and taxi fare will be offered. If the V/I is required to
travel or stay away from the Centre then accommodation and
transportation will be provided by the Chinese Arts Centre.
Chinese Arts Centre regards the volunteering and
internship process as a period of action learning. As such it will aim
to provide a much training and support to the V/I as time commitments
allow. V/Is are encouraged to ask staff to provide guidance in other
relevant areas of their learning. Chinese Arts Centre wishes to help
the V/I holistically to develop their careers.
Chinese Arts Centre is happy to act as a reference for
any of its V/I or write a statement about the V/I for future use. V/Is
should be aware that, legally, Chinese Arts Centre has to tell the
truth in such situations or is accountable for any inaccuracies, good
or bad.
If after reading these guidelines you would like to be
considered for a volunteer position or internship, please write
explaining what areas of work you would like experience in and what
time commitment you can make and include your C.V. This should be
forwarded to the CEO of Chinese Arts Centre who will contact you when
an appropriate opportunity arises.
